"An Act relative to preventing overdose deaths and increasing access to treatment", filed by Representatives Fernandes, Decker, and Senator Cyr (H.1981 | S.1242), would create a pilot program enabling municipalities to set up overdose prevention centers, where people who use drugs can safely consume pre-obtained controlled substances in a supportive environment without legal repercussions.  
 
Overdose prevention centers are proven to save lives, reduce harms related to drug use, and connect people to essential treatment and recovery support services. They should be a vital part of the state’s harm reduction strategy. 
  
Public health advocates in Rhode Island recently announced they will open the country’s first state-regulated overdose prevention center in early 2024. Massachusetts should follow their and other states’ lead.

Several communities across the state are interested in opening overdose prevention sites, including Somerville and other cities, but we need this legislation to establish the legal and regulatory framework for them to operate successfully.

Despite the state's efforts, 6 people die of a drug overdose in Massachusetts every day - and every drug overdose is preventable. Already successful in 200 locations around the world, and opening soon in Rhode Island, we know that overdose prevention centers save lives.

Please support H.1981/S.1242 to establish a pilot program for overdose prevention centers in Massachusetts!
