Every day, unregulated data brokers buy and sell detailed location information from our cellphones, revealing where we live, work, seek essential health care, and more. Anti-abortion extremists in other states can easily purchase this information and use it to target, harass, and prosecute the growing number of patients who travel here for care. Recent data shows a 37% increase in out-of-state patients seeking abortions in just the first four months after the Dobbs decision. 
 
To protect our privacy, safety, and access to essential health care, Massachusetts needs to pass the Location Shield Act (H.357/S.148), filed by Rep. Kate Lipper-Garabedian and Sen. Cynthia Creem. This bill would prohibit companies from engaging in the predatory practice of selling, leasing, or trading location data, while still allowing companies to collect and process this data for legitimate purposes with user consent. 
 
A recent poll shows that 92% of Massachusetts voters would support this law. I’m not surprised. I am extremely concerned for the privacy and safety of women, LGBTQ people, and other vulnerable groups — especially after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the door for increasingly cruel new laws criminalizing people who seek abortion care around the country.

I greatly appreciate the action that Massachusetts lawmakers have already taken to protect reproductive rights and access to health care in the wake of the Dobbs decision. Please take the next step by helping to pass this crucial new legislation.
