While Trump strips away status from immigrants who are here legally, masked ICE agents are becoming more violent: instilling fear in Massachusetts kids and parents at school drop-offs, smashing car windows, and illegally detaining and deporting Bay Staters. Enough is enough.

Cooperating with ICE only empowers agents to stoke fear in our communities. Ask lawmakers to pass these simple reforms to ensure Massachusetts is not complicit in ICE's dirty work.

As your constituent, I want to ask you to protect Massachusetts communities by holding the line against ICE’s unaccountable actions, which have gone too far.

Message Body

Whatever your views on immigration, ICE is now going after people who have lived here legally for decades, stripping them of their legal status, and deporting them without due process. Local law enforcement should not work with violent federal agencies that are sowing chaos. It's bad for public safety, public trust, and our economy.

Masked ICE agents have been ripping people off the streets, smashing out car windows, and beating people up. Assisting ICE empowers them to stoke fear in our communities.

In light of the last many months, organizations advocating for immigrants, labor unions, and legal advocates have identified and recently coalesced around 3 key actions our state legislature can take to protect our communities.

Please ask leadership to pass these straightforward reforms:

1.	Don't assist ICE.  
Massachusetts law enforcement must never assist ICE in making civil immigration arrests (taking people into custody when no crime has been committed) or ask members of the public about their immigration status.

2.	Don't turn police into ICE agents.  
ICE is pressuring and incentivizing local police departments to sign up for its 287(g) program, which turns street-level officers into ICE agents. They are even offering bounty-style bonuses for police forces that bring in high rates of targeted residents. Massachusetts should prevent this from happening within our borders.

3.	Fund legal help to fight deportations. 
Pass the Immigrant Legal Defense Act to give immigrants who can't afford a private attorney a fighting chance in immigration court.

The vast majority of people ICE targets – nearly 80% of immigrants detained in the Commonwealth – have never been involved in the criminal legal system; they are children, parents, essential health care workers. Many have lived here legally for decades. It's time to restore Bay Staters' trust by passing these reforms.

Several bills have been filed to address these issues, including S.1681/H.2580, S.1122/H.1588, H.1635, H.2575, and S.1127/H.1954. I hope the legislature will work to advance the 3 priority reforms.
