With the beginning of a second Trump administration and new legislative session underway, Massachusetts lawmakers have a responsibility to protect our most vulnerable people from significant, growing threats like surveillance and mass deportation.

The ACLU of Massachusetts supports two priority bills that will help the Commonwealth protect its people and assert our values in the face of Trump and his cruel agenda: the Location Shield Act (HD2965/SD501) and the Dignity Not Deportations Act (HD3596/SD1107).

The Location Shield Act would ban the sale and trade of cellphone location data, while the Dignity Not Deportations Act would prohibit immigration detention in Massachusetts state and local facilities and end the voluntary donation of local resources for federal immigration enforcement.

Urge your state legislators to pass bills that will protect Bay Staters and assert Massachusetts values!

I'm gravely concerned about the safety and dignity of our vulnerable communities here in Massachusetts, especially domestic violence victims, LGBTQ people, abortion patients and providers, and immigrants. These bills would allow our state to assert both its values and its legitimate authority to protect such communities from both hostile private actors and federal overreach. 
 
The Location Shield Act (HD2965/SD501, filed by Rep. Lipper-Garabedian, Rep. Vieira, and Sen. Creem) would end the reckless practice of selling and trading cellphone location data on the open market, which regularly exposes our sensitive personal information to prying eyes and bad actors like stalkers, bounty hunters, and politically motivated prosecutors. Just the other week, one of the largest data brokers was hacked, exposing massive troves of sensitive data to unknown and possibly malicious parties. This shadow industry puts all of us at great risk, and Massachusetts must put a stop to it. 
 
The Dignity Not Deportations Act (HD3596/SD1107, filed by Rep. Barber, Rep. Dave Rogers, and Sen. Gomez) would end ICE detention contracts and 287(g) agreements, ensuring that state and local resources are not unnecessarily co-opted or donated in service of Trump's mass deportation schemes. Such plans threaten to tear families apart and devastate our economy. Although we can't change federal immigration policy, we don't have to contribute to ICE's increasing - and increasingly needless - cruelty.
