Currently, Massachusetts does not have strong legal protections for our private data. Data brokers and Big Tech are free to do almost anything they want with our personal information that might add to their profit, including selling our cellphone location data on the open market.

The Massachusetts Data Privacy Act (S.2619) would enshrine comprehensive data privacy laws. Specifically, it would ban the sale of our sensitive data, limit how companies handle our data, and provide strong and effective enforcement to hold companies accountable.

State senators already unanimously passed the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act – an encouraging sign. Now, urge your State Rep to pass comprehensive data privacy legislation in the House!

I strongly believe Massachusetts must pass comprehensive data privacy legislation to keep Bay Staters safe. As your constituent, I urge you to please support legislation like the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act (S.2619), recently passed by the Senate, a bill that would establish crucial data privacy measures for everyone in Massachusetts. This legislation is similar to H.78 and H.104, filed in the House.

Message Body

People across the political spectrum in Massachusetts support strong data privacy laws. Pew found 78% of Democrats and 68% of Republicans support lawmakers taking action to protect their online privacy, and 92% of Massachusetts voters support banning the sale of location data altogether.

Like the best privacy laws in other states, the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act would prohibit companies from selling our most sensitive data, like our precise location or information about our health, and it would adopt meaningful data minimization standards to require companies to only collect and process the data they need to provide services that consumers request. A strong data privacy law also needs to include strong and effective enforcement to hold companies accountable.

This legislation has the potential to save lives by protecting those vulnerable to violence and harassment, including victims of domestic abuse and stalking, healthcare providers and patients, and elected officials.

I implore you to protect our privacy and personal safety by passing the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act as swiftly as possible.
