Oppose SB211 and HB479 to Protect Free Speech

Act Now

Tell Kentucky lawmakers: Protect Kentuckians’ free speech rights and oppose Senate Bill 211 and House Bill 479.

The right to protest is one of the pillars of our democracy. These two bills are blatant attempts to stifle dissent in response to 2020 protests and the Attorney General’s failed leadership in Breonna Taylor’s murder investigation.

SB211 would enhance penalties for protest-related crimes. It would also make it illegal to camp in public spaces, directly targeting protesters occupying Injustice Square in Louisville. Consequently, SB211 would also make it illegal for people without housing to sleep outside, even if all shelters are full and there are no other options.

HB479 would allow the Attorney General to personally file charges against people specifically for protest-related crimes, even if local prosecutors decline to do so. This is a blatant attempt to stifle free speech, as it does not expand his powers in any other areas.

Senate Bill 211 and House Bill 479 are dangerous attacks on Kentuckians’ right to free speech. After the protests in 2020, it is clear we should engage in more dialogue, rather than silence the voices of fellow Kentuckians.

The right to protest is one of the pillars of our democracy and must be protected. Please oppose Senate Bill 211 and House Bill 479.

Sincerely,
