SB 818 passed this session, creating personal health and safety standards for grades K-5 and updating and expanding comprehensive sexual health education standards in grades 6-12 to give young people the information and tools they need to be safe and support responsible and informed decision making about their health and well-being throughout their lives.

I support comprehensive and inclusive sex education!

As your constituent I write to share my strong support of the passage of the Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act (SB 818). Young people in our state need the most current and comprehensive personal health and safety, and sexual health education in order to make healthy decisions throughout their lives.

Our current standards for sexual health education were antiquated and outmoded. They were not serving all students by providing the information they need.

The Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act (SB 818) addressed this deficit by creating personal health and safety standards for grades K-5. It also updates and expands comprehensive sexual health education standards in grades 6-12 to give young people the information and tools they need to be safe and support responsible and informed decision making about their health and well-being throughout their lives. These new standards provide young people in Illinois with a full toolbox of knowledge and skills.

To be clear, the Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act does NOT:
- Force students into any class; parents can still opt-out;
- Mandate a specific curriculum in any school; those decisions are still made locally; and,
- Promote information for students that is not age-appropriate.

I think the General Assembly did the right thing by passing the Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act. This is the best way that we serve the interests of students all across the State of Illinois.

Sincerely,
