Despite what some of our state elected officials are saying, you already know that diversity, equity, and inclusion programs are about creating equitable opportunity for all, not special privileges for some. And your voice needs to be heard at the Statehouse.

In an analysis from Harvard Business Review, researchers found that companies with strong DEI programs were more adaptable to change, boasted better company performance, and improved employee engagement.

We know that the impact of a DEI ban will be far-reaching. Hoosiers are already coming forward to share how the end of DEI programs could significantly affect their futures. Indiana's colleges are already shuttering vital programming to support underrepresented students.

DEI expands opportunity in our nation by bettering education outcomes, increasing business performance, and giving all communities a chance at the American Dream. Which is exactly why we need you to take action and tell Indiana's lawmakers that we are not going to let our state backslide.

Subject Please vote no on SB 289 to protect equal opportunity in Indiana

I am writing to urge you to vote no on SB 289 if it is heard by the House Judiciary Committee. Well-functioning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, or DEI programs, are about welcoming people into an agency, company, school, or business. These programs are not about exclusion.

In Indiana, these programs support full participation for Hoosiers regardless of a person's race, sex, disability, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or national origin. They also support the needs of Hoosiers who live or come from rural, suburban, and urban parts of our state. As Indiana becomes increasingly diverse, it is important that our state workplaces, state services, and public universities are ones that welcome and support all Hoosiers.

I am concerned with SB 289's incredibly broad scope. It would eliminate DEI programs and positions that contribute to making state employment attractive and state services more accessible and relevant to all Hoosiers. At the university level, these programs are important for student retention as they help students feel comfortable and welcomed outside of the environment they grew up in. DEI programs also help faculty and staff who come to Indiana from all over the nation and world feel embraced in their new community.

Beyond DEI programs, though, the bill puts employee affinity groups, many student groups, and cultural celebrations at risk. The bill would also weaken the intellectual and cultural environment inside our state agencies and on our public university campuses.
