Virginia lawmakers passed legislation to protect access to Virginia courthouses by prohibiting warrantless Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests – but Gov. Spanberger has proposed amendments to gut those protections and keep our courthouses as ICE's hunting ground.

It is essential that every Virginian can safely access our courts and participate in the legal system, including survivors of domestic violence, parents in custody cases, violent crime victims, and witnesses.

Virginia lawmakers did the right thing by passing legislation that protects Virginians' access to court without fear of deportation or family separation. After all, our judicial system cannot function when people do not show up.

But we have ONE last chance to protect our courthouses from ICE's lawless terror.

Spanberger's amendments to HB 650 (Callsen)/ SB 351 (Salim), legislation passed to protect access to Virginia's courts and other sensitive locations by requiring officers to present a judicial warrant before entering the courthouse to make an arrest. Research shows these protections matter: 54 percent of judges report interruptions to court proceedings, and 82 percent of prosecutors said domestic violence cases had become harder to prosecute because immigrant survivors were too afraid to come to court.

The data speaks for itself: ICE arrests in courthouses make us less safe.
