Oppose Senate Bill 484 and House Bill 1

Gov. DeSantis' anti-peaceful protest bill, House Bill 1 and Senate Bill 484, will silence and criminalize everyday Floridians who want to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully protest.

Peaceful protest is an important way for everyday people to influence how our state leaders make decisions about our lives. The right to peacefully assemble and protest is protected by the First Amendment, and has been a profoundly important way for generation after generation to effect positive change throughout the history of our country.

Let your leaders know that we DO NOT need legislation that criminalizes peaceful protests.

Send your email to urge the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and House Justice Appropriations Committee to vote NO on Senate Bill 484 and House Bill 1.

Oppose Senate Bill 484 and HB 1

I urge you to oppose Senate Bill 484 and House Bill 1

Peaceful protest is an important way for everyday Floridians to influence how our state leaders make decisions about our lives. The right to peacefully assemble and protest is protected by the First Amendment, and has been a profoundly important way for generation after generation to effect positive change throughout the history of our country.

This bill will chill dissent, and silence and criminalize Floridians who want to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully protest.

This bill is not about public safety. It’s about criminalizing peaceful protesters advocating for racial justice. Law enforcement already has all the tools they need to protect public safety and prevent violence and property damage. The problem lies in how they have been selectively choosing to use these tools. More draconian punishments will not make our communities safer and will only chill dissent and result in more people of color being locked up in jail and prison for longer sentences for daring to exercise their First Amendment rights.
Polling shows that 90 percent of Floridians agree that “protecting our constitutional right to free assembly and free speech by legally protesting without fear of criminal charges” is important.

Please prioritize the real and critical needs of Floridians right now, like a supportive response to the damage caused by COVID-19 in our communities to our health and our economic well-being, and an equitable vaccine distribution.

Floridians simply do not need legislation like this anti-peaceful protest bill. I urge you to listen to Floridians like me.

Thank you for opposing Senate Bill 484 and House Bill 1.

Sincerely,
