The racist violence of law enforcement is deeply rooted in the white supremacist structures. For too long, our society has accepted the status quo of police targeting communities of color. For too long, police officers have been able to use excessive and deadly force without repercussions.

Every day, racist policing terrorizes people of color in every aspect of life. Running while Black. Breathing while Black. Driving while Black. It is a matter of life and death. Yet, too often law enforcement is not held accountable for their actions.

This lack of accountability erodes trust in law enforcement and makes our communities less safe, and justice cannot be served without accountability.

As State Attorney, you have tremendous power in our community. You can take officer-involved shootings seriously by investigating them and holding police accountable, or you can turn a blind eye to officers who shoot and kill members of our community.

As our state and the country reel from the senseless murder of George Floyd, the time is now for meaningful action that curbs police violence and addresses systemic racism in our policing and criminal justice systems.

I’m urging you today to pledge to take these four steps to keep Black Floridians safe from police violence, allow protesters to demand justice for the countless lives lost at the hands of law enforcement,  and hold law enforcement accountable for excessive uses of force.
 
1. Publicly announce that they will not bring charges and/or that they will drop charges against non-violent protesters exercising their First Amendment rights.

2. Advocate for pretrial release on non-monetary conditions for individuals who are arrested for protest-related, nonviolent actions (sit-ins, speech, peaceful assembly, mere curfew violations, standing in a street).

3. Eliminate unnecessary interactions between the police and community members, which too often lead to violence and death, by adopting policies not to prosecute certain low level offenses and expand pre-arrest diversion programs.

4. Hold officers accountable when they use excessive force or violence, starting with the requirement to release videos of officer-involved shootings and interactions that result in death.

I strongly urge you to adopt these policy recommendations to enact sensible police reform in Florida.
