IT’S TIME TO PASS FUNDING TO FIX UNHEALTHY & UNSAFE SCHOOL BUILDINGS IN MARYLAND

TAKE ACTION NOW

Temperatures are still freezing and heating systems are still breaking. Why haven’t our legislators passed emergency funding yet so schools can fix these issues? With the current state of school buildings in Maryland, we need access to funding so our kids have an adequate and warm place to learn.

Take action to urge Maryland legislators to pass the Healthy School Facility Fund (SB 611).

Please take action now.

It's still cold! -- Take action for school facilities funding
Dear Representative,

Many heating systems in schools across Maryland broke down during the freeze in January. In Baltimore City alone, approximately 80 school buildings were affected by the weather conditions, causing the school district to close all schools for several days. Students missed valuable days of school while parents and the City scrambled to find safe and warm places for students to go.

Every time temperatures drop back to freezing, schools have to keep closing due to faulty heating systems among other problems that come with school buildings that are nearly 50 years old on average

The fact is that there are many structures and mechanical systems in school buildings that are in desperate need of replacement, and local and state resources have been grossly inadequate to address the problems comprehensively. Senate Bill 611 — Healthy School Facilities Fund — seeks to provide $30 million a year to make emergency facility repairs directly related to the health and safety of students.

Rather than waiting even longer to get our schools fixed, I urge you to prioritize our public schools and pass SB 611 now!

Sincerely,
