A federal court just granted anti-abortion politicians' request for a severe nationwide restriction on mifepristone, a medication that patients have safely used for abortion and miscarriage care for over 25 years.
The court’s order forces people in all 50 states to pick up this medication in person instead of filling their prescription by mail or at a pharmacy. While the Supreme Court put this decision on hold for one week, until May 11, unless it tosses out this suit entirely it threatens to upend how people get abortion and miscarriage care – even in states where abortion is protected. Patients may have to travel, sometimes hundreds of miles, to a health center just to get a pill they can take safely at home.
This unnecessary and burdensome travel could mean that countless people – especially those who live in rural areas, on low incomes, with disabilities, or who are facing intimate partner violence – lose access to this safe, effective medication altogether.
With this ruling, anti-abortion politicians are one step closer to their goal of ending all abortion access nationwide. Our ability to get the health care we need shouldn't be in question. Tell Congress to protect the right to abortion, including medication abortion, and guarantee meaningful access to abortion for everyone, regardless of who they are or where they live.
