Defend Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The message:

Programs of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) seek to address the glaring inequities in South Carolina’s schools and institutions. South Carolina House Bill 3927 would prohibit DEI programs in all state agencies, K-12 public schools, colleges, and universities. Additionally, it would direct state agencies to pressure private companies and organizations to abandon their commitments to DEI.

The impact:

The effects of H. 3927 would be wide-reaching and harmful. The authors of the bill define DEI programs as ones that “promote policies or procedures designed or implemented in reference to race, sex, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation for any purpose other than ensuring compliance with any applicable court order or state or federal law.” Programs that recruit women into engineering careers, medical research addressing racial health disparities, and diversity hiring initiatives could all be threatened by this bill if it is signed into law.
