Call for an End to Driver's License Suspensions

Minnesota law allows the suspension of someone’s driver’s license if they fail to pay a fine for a traffic violation or don’t appear in court for a ticket. This creates a two-tiered justice system where the wealthy may simply pay a ticket, while people without much money suffer more severe consequences.

When people lose their driver's licenses, it makes it hard for them to get to work, go to school, and care for their families. Driver's license suspensions regularly lead to job loss, and even jail time when people have no choice but to drive on a suspended license.

These are choices that wealthy people don't have to make, and these are consequences that wealthy people don't have to endure when they make a mistake.

We have a chance to reform driver's license suspensions to protect the rights of people who can't afford to pay fines and fees. Contact the Transportation omnibus conference committee members and ask them to support the Driver's License Suspension reform bill.

Dear members of the Transportation omnibus conference committee,

I am writing to ask for your support on the driver's license suspension reform bill.

Minnesota law currently allows the suspension of someone’s driver’s license if they fail to pay a fine for a traffic violation or don’t appear in court for a ticket. This creates a two-tiered justice system where the wealthy may simply pay a ticket, while people without much money suffer more severe consequences.

To protect the rights and liberties of all Minnesotans, we need to make sure that people experience similar consequences for the same mistakes — regardless of their income, race, age, or where they live.

Please support the driver's license suspension reform bill as a critical step toward this goal.

Sincerely,
