SB 1394 Must Bring Real Transparency to Arizona Charter Schools

TAKE ACTION NOW

Arizona charter schools are public schools. Yet, many of these taxpayer-funded schools are allowed to operate in secrecy due to minimal regulations and oversight. The ACLU of Arizona's Demand to Learn campaign is focused on eliminating practices that disproportionately push children out of the classroom and wants to hold all Arizona public schools, district and charter, accountable to the communities they serve.

A charter school reform bill, Senate Bill 1394, was introduced at Arizona Legislature but it does not do nearly enough to bring transparency to these taxpayer-funded schools. Many loopholes exist in the bill that must be solved before the bill moves forward. We believe it is crucial that teachers, students, and parents are brought to the table to discuss charter reform.

Please take action now.

Senate Bill 1394 is a good start, but it doesn't do enough to bring accountability and transparency to Arizona's publicly funded charter schools. To make these schools equitable and welcoming to all students, we must do the following:

Only by working together can we address the inequality plaguing Arizona charter schools. I hope that teachers, students, and parents are brought to the table to discuss charter reform and that these schools are held accountable to the communities they serve.
