Background:

HB 2867 and HB 2880 would curb free speech at a time when we must firmly protect people’s right to dissent. HB 2867 was designed to punish students and educators who disagree with government views on Israel and sow dangerous divisions. HB 2880 creates a vague, broad encampment ban on campus, no matter their reason or urgency. Send your senator a message urging them to vote “no.”

The recipient:

Arizona senators

The impact:

Students, faculty, and university staff are often at the forefront of civil and human rights movements, putting their futures on the line to call out injustice where they see it. Rather than fortifying free speech protections in the wake of the federal government’s unconstitutional actions against student protesters, the Arizona legislature is advancing bills that would enable their attacks. Urge your senator to oppose HB 2867 and HB 2880.

Review Message

We put in some suggestions, but make the message your own where possible!

Subject:

Protect free speech on campus: vote “NO” on HB2867 and HB2880

Body:

Ideas are not illegal, and there is no “controversial speech” exception to the First Amendment. Our right to free speech includes advocacy for Palestine, Israel, or any population, movement, or cause. Furthermore, any limits on when, where, and how people protest must be accomplished with the least restrictive means. Please vote “NO” on HB 2867 and HB 2880.

Students and people who work in academia are often at the forefront of civil and human rights movements. Throughout history, they’ve put their futures on the line to call out injustice where they see it. Now more than ever, they should be protected, not punished. Please oppose HB 2867 and HB 2880.

Sincerely,
