The background:

In 2024, Governor DeWine signed a harmful, anti-LGBTQ bill into law, prohibiting transgender people from using restrooms aligned with their gender identity in K-12 schools and institutions of higher education. Bills that mandate individuals to use restrooms and other facilities that align with their sex assigned at birth are cruel and exclusionary.

Municipalities like Athens can respond to these state and federal attacks on safe restroom access by making all public single-occupancy bathrooms (defined as having no more than one toilet, one sink, a urinal, and a door that locks) gender neutral.

Last year, Athens City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring the city a “safe haven” for transgender and non-binary individuals; adopting a gender-neutral restroom policy is the logical, compassionate next phase to extend protections to our friends and neighbors.

Local leaders must advance proactive policies that promote LGBTQ+ equality. Tell Athens City Council Officials to support the Single Occupancy Bathroom Ordinance!
