Congress is locked in negotiations over whether to make healthcare affordable or let costs skyrocket. But instead of remaining focused on the needs of families nationwide, anti-abortion groups are trying to exploit the debate to push abortion out of reach by eliminating it from insurance plans. We must take action.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that keep health care affordable for more than 22 million people are set to expire in the New Year. If Congress refuses to extend these tax credits, everyday people will face monthly premiums going up by hundreds of dollars starting in January. This health coverage is essential to all of us, but it is especially important for people with low incomes, people of color, and young people – the same people who also face increased barriers to abortion care.
Unbothered by the harm that the loss of health insurance will wreak on people's lives, anti-abortion politicians are refusing to reinstate these credits. But they’ve proposed an alternative that is not only inadequate in helping people afford health care generally but would also restrict payments for abortion services and coverage. This transparent attempt to sabotage our health care and take away our reproductive freedom must be stopped. Tell Congress to protect our right to affordable, essential health care, including abortion care.
