Resist AB 165! California Must Protect Digital Privacy & Free Speech

AB 165 (Cooper) will erase essential digital privacy and free speech protections for the more than six million Californians who attend or work in the public schools.

Now more than ever, Californians of all ages and backgrounds need to be able to use their electronic devices and online accounts to safely communicate and connect about religion, immigration, health, political and social protest, and other sensitive issues. We can't allow invasive searches of millions of individuals without proper oversight, notice, or safeguards to limit what sensitive information the government searches and shares, including with federal agencies.

We need to stop AB 165 before it rips away existing legal protections against dragnet government searches and harassment – right when these protections are most essential.

Join the resistance today and make sure California legislators keep California families safe and say NO to AB 165.

To California Legislators:

As your constituent, I hope that I can count on you to keep Californians of all ages and backgrounds safe and OPPOSE AB 165.  This bill unnecessarily guts digital privacy and free speech protections for vulnerable people — at a time when we need them most.

Over six million Californians of all backgrounds attend or work in our public schools. They rely on digital devices and online accounts to connect and communicate about sensitive issues like religion, immigration, physical and mental health, and political and social protest. California’s Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA) provides the protection needed for this sensitive information.

AB 165 rips away these privacy and free speech protections for Californians and threatens dragnet government searches, harassment, and worse. In our current political climate, it is all the more important to maintain California’s current privacy and free speech protections and say NO to AB 165.
