Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay

End Indefinite Detention at Guantánamo Bay Prison

Update (10/17/16):“Guantanamo Diary” author Mohamedou Slahi was just released. He’s finally home after 14 years at Guantánamo, years of legal battle, and advocacy from around the globe.

Sixty men remain–many of them have lived through years of delays to their hearings for release and transfers. And it could stay that way.

Tell President Obama to end indefinite detention and speed up transfers of prisoners waiting for release.

One of the worst practices at Guantánamo is the imprisonment of people without charge and with no end in sight. And President Obama’s Guantánamo closure plan will keep this practice of indefinite detention alive and well – and bring it home to U.S. soil.

The president actually has means to reduce the number of prisoners being held indefinitely. Years ago, President Obama set up a Periodic Review Board (PRB) to evaluate each detainee for clearance. But excruciating delays on PRB hearings and follow-up releases left dozens of detainees trapped indefinitely.

Half of the remaining detainees are in limbo – never charged with a crime, but not cleared to be sent home. Others are cleared for overseas release but have been waiting seven or more years to be transferred out.

There’s no doubt closing Guantánamo matters deeply to the president. When he announced his new closure plan, he emphasized the “detention facility at Guantánamo Bay does not advance our national security. It undermines it.”

So why perpetuate this shameful prison with years-long delays in releasing prisoners?

Tell President Obama to do his part to end indefinite detention by speeding up transfers and PRB decisions of prisoners who have been waiting for years.
