This is a legal intake form for the ACLU of Connecticut. If the incident or issue that you reference did not take place in Connecticut, please do not fill out this form. We are unable to respond to requests for legal help regarding issues or incidents that occurred in other states. Please fill out this form as completely as possible. If we need information in addition to what is on this form, we will contact you. We will respond as quickly as possible. However, please be aware that due to the number of requests for assistance we receive, we are able to accept only a small percentage of cases.

The ACLU of Connecticut generally files cases that affect the civil liberties of large numbers of people, rather than those involving a dispute between two parties.

The basic criteria are:

Did the incident underlying this case occur in Connecticut?
Does this case raise significant civil liberties or civil rights issues?
What effect will this case have on people other than the parties involved?
What is the potential impact of the case?

Things to keep in mind:

Unless and until the ACLU of Connecticut agrees to take your case, you are solely responsible for any and all statutes of limitation or other deadlines which might apply to your specific situation. If you have concerns about statutes of limitations or if you feel your case demands immediate attention, you may wish to seek advice from an attorney.

The ACLU of Connecticut generally cannot accept cases such as:

Landlord/tenant disputes.
Individuals denied benefits such as worker’s compensation or unemployment benefits.
Criminal cases or complaints about a person’s attorney in a criminal case. (Only in limited cases, such as a person being prosecuted for exercising his or her First Amendment rights, do we consider accepting criminal cases.)
Private civil disputes including contractual matters.
Domestic matters.
Challenges to convictions or prison sentences.
