Thank Olympia for ending modern-day debtors' prisons

Thanks to your support and the tireless efforts of advocates and allies, the legislature has passed HB 1783, which reforms the way the state handles  court-imposed fees, fines, costs and restitution known as Legal Financial Obligations (LFOs). The measure is headed to the Governor’s desk, and he has committed to sign this important bill into law. The measure changes the way that Washington handles court fines and fees by prioritizing restitution to crime victims, setting clear standards for the ability to pay, eliminating steep interest rates that keep people tied to the criminal justice system for life, and ending the practice of jailing people who are unable to pay LFOs. Sign the letter thanking the Governor and legislators who have supported this critical reform.

It is an important step toward a criminal justice system that does not unfairly burden poor people.

We, the undersigned, thank you for your support of this critical criminal justice reform bill.
