Thank Olympia for ending modern-day debtors' prisons

Thanks to your support and the tireless efforts of advocates and allies, the legislature has passed and the Governor has signed HB 1783, which reforms the way the state handles court-imposed fees, fines, costs, and restitution known as Legal Financial Obligations (LFOs). The measure prioritizes restitution to crime victims, sets clear standards for the ability to pay, eliminates steep interest rates that keep people tied to the criminal justice system for life, and ends the practice of jailing people who are unable to pay LFOs. Sign the letter thanking the Governor and legislators who have supported this critical reform.

Dear Legislators and Governor:

Thank you for your support of HB 1783, which reforms the way the state handles Legal Financial Obligations. This important legislation assures fairness for people with lesser means, promotes successful reentry, and prioritizes compensating crime victims. It is an important step toward a criminal justice system that does not unfairly burden poor people.

We, the undersigned, thank you for your support of this critical criminal justice reform bill.
