The Hollywood community is diverse with immigrants representing over 30 percent of residents. Unfortunately, Federal and State laws fall short in protecting immigrants. Our broken immigration system has led to detention, family separation, cruelty and even death at the hands of ICE. This is why it is imperative that local governments do their part in supporting their own immigrant populations.

As Hollywood residents, we urge the City to consider immigrant-friendly local legislation in support of our unique and welcoming community. Specifically, we urge consideration of legislation that includes the following, which would be most beneficial for immigrant populations.

Specifically, we urge consideration of legislation with the following provisions.

Prohibit discrimination based on race, national origin, color, ability to speak English, and other factors that are specific to immigrant communities.

Protecting crime victims and enhancing community safety by creating clear processes for issuing U visa forms for immigrants who assist law enforcement in reporting crimes.

Creating an Immigrant Legal Assistance Fund to assist immigrants in unwarranted detention and deportation cases and ensure that immigrant parents are not separated from their children.

Enhancing transparency and oversight of immigrant enforcement operations happening in your community and creating avenues for community input on data and decisions being made relating to immigrants, such as through an Immigration Community Advisory Board.

Declining to contract or enter into certain agreements with ICE.

Creating processes to preserve immigrants’ rights for those subject to immigration detainers.

Protecting immigrants reflects the values of the City of Hollywood and makes our communities safer for everyone.
