Immigration detention is cruel, inhumane, and anti-American. Delaney Hall is not an exception.

The conditions at Delaney Hall in Newark are deplorable. Those detained inside are subjected to rancid and inedible food, systematic and egregious medical neglect, and coercion into giving up their rights, including pressuring detained people into signing voluntary departure orders and deportation documents they do not understand. When detained people spoke out against these reprehensible and degrading abuses by going on a hunger and labor strike, ICE responded with retaliation, putting strikers in solitary confinement and transferring them to other detention facilities hundreds of miles away from their families and communities.

New Jersey has made it clear that there is no place for immigration detention in the Garden State. Our leaders have called for the closure of Delaney Hall, our Attorney General has sued to force health inspectors who should be allowed access inside the facility, and repeatedly, our communities have organized and shown up to loudly say NO to the Trump administration’s detention and deportation machine.

The ACLU of New Jersey is calling for the immediate and permanent closure of Delaney Hall – and all facilities like it. Join us by adding your name today.
