Support Fair Chance Hiring
A reliable job is one of the most important steps to successful re-entry and to reducing recidivism. And yet, a Granite Stater with a criminal record faces numerous barriers to employment, including the little box on job application forms that applicants must check if they have a criminal record. Checking that box too often results in automatic disqualification. It’s time for New Hampshire to adopt Fair Chance Hiring, which would remove the box from application forms, and ensure that all job applicants have a fair chance to be reviewed on their merits. Employers could still ask about a criminal record in the first interview wherein applicants have an opportunity to explain the context of their record. Someone’s criminal record shouldn’t be the only factor employers consider.
