Tonight Scribner, Nebraska's city council is likely approve an anti-immigrant ordinance similar to Fremont's in an attempt to drive out immigrants and their families by punishing those who rent or employ individuals the ordinance classifies as "illegal."
The constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of their immigration status. The city council has quietly moved this ordinance through its process, and Scribner's mayor said he's heard no objections to the measure.
Tell him he must put a stop to it.
Dear Scribner Mayor Ken Thomas,
This ordinance invites harassment, racial profiling and discrimination in your town against anyone who speaks with an accent or looks "foreign." Further, it prevents people from finding employment or housing. This is no way to grow a small town, which was a campaign promise you made when elected mayor.
Rather than waste taxpayer money and municipal resources on these misguided laws, you can better address concerns about immigration by supporting more rational policies instead of restrictive statutes that violate both the law and American values of fairness.
I urge you to veto this discriminatory ordinance.
Sincerely,
