Protect Pregnant Women in Prison

   Main petition image

We must protect pregnant women in prison by making it illegal to shackle them during childbirth. It’s medically dangerous and unnecessary.

Stand with us and tell #MoLeg it’s time to end this cruel and unusual practice in Missouri by passing House Bill 1627 and Senate Bill 803.

In the past four years, the ACLU has represented two women, Tara Rhodes and Megon Riedel, who experienced this treatment during childbirth.

We must act now.

The number of women in prison—along with the number of women giving birth in prison—continues to rise each year.

We must protect pregnant women in prison by making it illegal to shackle them during childbirth. It’s medically dangerous and unnecessary. No woman has ever tried to escape from prison during labor. Ever.
