Tell Maine Officials: Keep Flock Out of Maine

Most recent signers:

Flock cameras are quietly being installed in towns and cities across Maine, creating a dragnet surveillance system that threatens our constitutional rights.

Automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) from companies like Flock, Axon, and Motorola are tracking, logging, and sharing your movements without a warrant. Small, high-speed cameras photograph license plates, and then AI catalogs the make, model, color, license plate number, bumper stickers, and even scratches. Flock makes it capable for that information to then be stored in a nationwide database that any law enforcement agency in the country with a Flock contract can search.

This kind of mass surveillance threatens our constitutional rights to privacy, to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, and to freedom of speech and association.

But we are not powerless. The ACLU of Maine is sending public records requests to towns and cities across Maine to find out where these cameras are being used and who has access to the data. And calling for public accountability works: After South Portland residents spoke out, the city canceled its contract with Flock. When Fryeburg considered purchasing the cameras, the proposal was defeated unanimously. When we use our voices, officials listen.
