Stop Health Care Denials by Religious Hospitals
Everyone should be able to get the health care they need. But religious restrictions on health care represent a significant and growing threat to California patients. Health systems that make decisions based on religious doctrine instead of evidence-based medicine deny patients reproductive and LGBTQ-inclusive care, discriminate against patients, and have led to infection and even death.
We urge Attorney General Xavier Becerra to protect patient health as he considers the proposed merger between St. Joseph Health and Adventist Health, two hospital systems that impose religious restrictions on health care.
This deal involves hospitals in Humboldt, Lake County, Sonoma, Solano, Mendocino, and Napa counties, but these mergers impact patients statewide.
Any approval should include the requirement that these institutions eliminate non-medical restrictions on reproductive health care, or at the very least maintain current levels and types of reproductive health services. In keeping with California non-discrimination law, transgender patients cannot be denied healthcare simply because they are transgender.
