President Trump is not above the Constitution.
Yet from his first day in office, he's targeted birthright citizenship – a fundamental right from America's founding, enshrined in the 14th Amendment and federal law – fueling months of fear and uncertainty for families across the country. This is part of a broader effort to redefine who belongs in our country. The Trump administration is deporting families, detaining our loved ones, and now targeting babies to further this agenda.
That's why the ACLU is going to the Supreme Court to defend birthright citizenship on April 1st – and we need you there with us. Add your name in support of safeguarding citizenship for all babies born in the U.S., and we'll bring your signature with us to D.C.
President Trump's attack on birthright citizenship is a profound misuse of executive power and part of a broader strategy to reshape who is protected and "belongs" in this country.
From President Trump's first day in office, he's been targeting immigrants. He's sent masked, armed agents into our streets to arrest people, including U.S. citizens, based on their accents, jobs, and race. He's detained refugees, targeted asylum seekers, ended protected status for hundreds of thousands of people, created a national registry, and plans to denaturalize citizens. Eliminating birthright citizenship – denying rights to babies in the only country they've ever lived in – is at the center of his cruel agenda to redefine who gets to be American.
The president is attempting to deny people their rights simply because of who their parents are. But the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born in the United States regardless of where their parents were born. The Constitution, not the president, decides who is a citizen. We cannot allow this abuse of power to go unanswered. That is why I am adding my name in support of the ACLU as they go to the Supreme Court to defend this fundamental right – and we encourage every person to join with us.
