The message:
Extreme heat is becoming the norm in New Jersey. It's time to protect workers and pass the Occupational Heat-Related Illness and Injury Prevention Program.
Extreme heat is dangerous and puts workers who have no way to escape the heat at increased risk of dehydration and heat stroke as well as long-term health issues including kidney failure, heart failure, and cognitive decline.
Establishing the Occupational Heat-Related Illness and Injury Prevention Program (S4137/A1995), also known as the Heat Standard, would protect workers from these dangerous conditions by putting critical protections in place.
This legislation would require New Jersey employers to create heat-illness and injury-prevention plans for work in extreme heat conditions and provide basic protections like:
- Providing workers with clean water.
- Providing rest breaks with access to shade or climate-controlled spaces.
- Limiting the amount of time employees are exposed to extreme heat during the workday.
- Providing emergency response for employees suffering from a heat illness.
This bill would protect workers who have no way to escape the heat, including construction crews, landscapers, people working in kitchens preparing our food, people who load and drive for the warehouses that keep deliveries moving, farmworkers, and so many more.
Send a message to your lawmakers NOW and tell them to pass the Heat Standard (S4137/A1995).
