The Narragansett Town Council is discussing Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras at their meeting on Monday, August 3. The Town currently has four cameras in place, but given South Kingstown's recent decision to cancel its contract with Flock, the Council President has put the topic of ALPR cameras on the agenda.

Flock Safety cameras can capture much more information than just license plates, and they can share that data with other police departments and federal agencies across the country, creating a network of surveillance technology.

For example, Flock Safety camera data from local police nationwide has been used by ICE to find people, police departments to track protesters, and even used by police in Texas to find a woman who was seeking an abortion.

Regardless of what the police say their intentions are in using the system, there are no state laws protecting our privacy rights, our data, or government transparency in the usage of Flock Safety cameras.
