Lawmakers want Arizona voters to decide the fate of two cruel and discriminatory ballot referrals that would dictate what name and pronouns trans students must go by, which bathroom they can use, and would ban them from all organized sports.

All students deserve compassion, inclusion, and safe learning environments. SCR 1006 and HCR 2003 would do nothing but perpetuate harm.

Trans youth in Arizona deserve the same opportunities, experiences, rights, and protections as every other student. Yet SCR 1006 and HCR 2003 represent an alarming escalation in the erosion of trans people’s rights. Voting to place either of these concurrent resolutions on the ballot is an endorsement of government-enforced discrimination. Vote NO on SCR 1001 and HCR 2003.

Message Body

Research consistently shows that when families, peers, and teachers respect a trans student’s name and pronouns, they experience greater well-being. Why would we knowingly want to jeopardize outcomes that help young people feel safe and supported with a ballot referral like SCR 1006?

Beyond the harm to students’ mental health, SCR 1006 would force educators and peers to act as “gender police,” monitoring and reporting perceived identity discrepancies rather than focusing on fostering productive learning environments. SCR 1006 would also deny trans students the ability to use restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity, increasing stigma and discrimination in schools. No government body should compel schools, and those within them, to question and examine a child’s identity.

HCR 2003 is equally harmful. It would expand Arizona’s existing law banning trans athletes from competing in public school sports — and force private schools to comply. HCR 2003 even prohibits parents and allies of trans kids from setting up their own private sports teams and associations.

Such policies create a dangerous slippery slope: anyone who does not conform to narrow expectations of what a girl or boy “should” look like could be subjected to questioning, invasions of privacy, or other forms of confrontation.  This risk isn’t theoretical — it is real. Incidents across the country, and even here in Arizona, have shown that gender policing not only harms trans people, but cisgender people as well.

Schools should be places where kids and teens feel safe to learn, grow, and develop a sense of community. Protecting the rights of trans youth solidifies our shared commitment to dignity, privacy, and opportunity for all. I urge you to vote NO on SCR 1006 and HCR 2003.
