U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has routinely violated human and civil rights since its creation in 2003, and it has only ramped up its cruelty as an enforcement arm for the second Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign.

South Carolina House Bill 4764 would force every law enforcement agency that operates a correctional facility to do ICE’s dirty work by signing a collaboration agreement on immigration enforcement.

I am asking you to vote No on House Bill 4764, which would force local law enforcement agencies to do the work of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Federal immigration enforcement is not the job of our local police officers and sheriff’s deputies. They are not trained to handle immigration enforcement. Forcing them to interrogate people about their immigration status exposes local agencies to liability for procedural errors and civil rights violations.

I want my local police to focus on public safety and solving local crimes. Not only is immigration enforcement a distraction from their work, but ICE collaboration also drives a wedge between officers and immigrant communities. Studies have shown that when local law enforcement officers are deputized to do ICE’s work, immigrants are less likely to come forward as witnesses and victims of crimes. That makes all of us less safe.

For the sake of public safety, financial responsibility, and civil liberties, please vote No on H. 4764.
