TAKE ACTION: STOP HB 1250/SB 1041

Tennessee lawmakers are advancing HB 1250/SB 1041, legislation that would place chaplains in public schools to provide “support and services” to students, staff, and parents. These religious officials would not need state certification or training in child development, mental health, or education. And they'd be largely immune from lawsuits for their actions or statements unless someone can prove they acted “maliciously” and “deliberately intended to cause harm.”

Even trained chaplains oppose the move. A coalition of chaplains who serve in hospitals, prisons, and the military wrote to state legislators explaining why chaplain programs don't belong in public schools. As they put it: “We cooperate with mental health counselors; we do not compete with them.”

Students struggling with mental health, family crises, or identity questions need trained school counselors and mental health professionals. Families and houses of worship should guide children's spiritual development, not government.

Tell your legislator to vote “NO” and protect students' wellbeing and religious freedom.
