California’s housing crisis affects everyone, and AB 1165 offers a smart path forward.

Of the six million households that rent in the state, about one million are paying more than half of their income toward rent. These households are forced to make difficult choices to stretch their paycheck in order to pay their rent, choices that can often threaten their housing stability, access to transportation, ability to keep food on the table or pay for healthcare.

AB 1165 will help the state address our housing affordability crisis by developing a comprehensive plan to deliver housing security to Californians. AB 1165 requires the state to:

Determine how to invest resources and what impact these investments will achieve, so that the state is investing toward the greatest impact.

Collaborate to boost and leverage local and federal resources.

Houselessness and housing unaffordability continues to be a pressing crisis in California. Over the course of the last year, over 330,000 people experienced houselessness across the state. Nearly 30% of California’s renters pay over half their income on housing, with well over 1 million households experiencing severe rent burden, paying over half of their incomes in rent.

These households are forced to make difficult choices to stretch their paycheck in order to pay their rent, choices that can often threaten their housing stability, access to transportation, ability to keep food on the table or pay for healthcare. This unaffordability struggle pushes thousands of Californians into houselessness every day, overwhelming our response systems and resources which have primarily been funded by solely one-time investments.

AB 1165 will help the state address our housing and affordability crisis by developing goals and aligning investments with a comprehensive plan to deliver housing security to Californians. We need our leaders to take meaningful action and make ongoing investments scaled to solve our housing crisis.

AB 1165 is the first step to fund solutions that will keep Californians housed and I urge you to vote YES.
