UPDATE (9/12): The House narrowly passed this bill, paving the way for this to potentially come up for a vote in the Senate. Still, thousands of ACLU supporters contacted their Representatives to condemn this bill, and dozens of members of Congress held the line and rejected this legislation. Now, we’re keeping up the pressure to prevent it from ever passing the Senate.
President Trump's administration is violently arresting our immigrant neighbors and loved ones, building internment camps, and deporting and detaining catastrophic numbers of people. Now, a bill in Congress would further dehumanize immigrants and give this administration a powerful new tool for targeting community members.
This bill, H.R. 3486, would impose extreme prison sentences on people seeking asylum, teenagers, and people trying to reunite with their families – not for violent conduct, but for the manner in which they entered the U.S. Let's be clear: This bill would only fuel mass incarceration and make us all less safe. If passed, it would divert resources that should be used for legitimate emergencies and public safety concerns – and would lead to even more government-led attacks, raids, and violence. Immigrants should not be subjected to cruelty and life sentences: Tell your representatives to vote no on this dangerous bill.
