We deserve straight answers on cabinet appointments that could pose a serious risk to our civil rights and civil liberties. As a matter of policy the ACLU does not endorse or oppose nominees for cabinet-level positions – but we do examine and publicize nominees' civil liberties and civil rights records.
Kash Patel, the right-wing commentator and former intelligence official, is Trump's choice for director of the Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI). Patel has described his desire to target perceived enemies, including the press and civil servants – additionally, his political allegiance and financial ties to President Trump raise concerns about whether he can maintain the FBI's independence from influence. In fact, on his first day in office, President Trump followed Patel's calls to target 51 former officials he had previously described as "enemies."
During his confirmation hearing in the Senate, we're urging the Senate to ask Kash Patel the critical questions. Join us by sending your own message today.
