Tell Congress: Say 'NO' to Discriminatory Land Laws

Dangerous laws are being introduced at the state and federal level right now that use "national security" as an excuse to discriminate against immigrants from China. In Florida, for example, Governor DeSantis has banned many Chinese immigrants from buying a house in much of the state – a move that is both unconstitutional and unfortunately, not new.

This type of "alien land law" should sound alarm bells for all of us. From the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, to the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans, to the ongoing post-9/11 surveillance of Black and Brown communities – we’ve seen how such racist policies created under the guise of "national security" are racist and used to scapegoat entire communities.

We cannot allow history to repeat itself: Tell your Members of Congress to speak out against any law that falsely equates Chinese people with the Chinese government.

As your constituent, I am growing extremely concerned by the state and federal laws cropping up across our country by lawmakers who use "national security" as an excuse to discriminate against people based on where they are from.

Florida's unconstitutional SB 264, for instance, bans many Chinese immigrants, including people here as professors, students, employees, and scientists, from buying a home in large swaths of the state. This should not be what our nation is about. Any policy that equates ordinary people from China with the Chinese government is both racist and wrong, and I'm urging you to act.

Everyone in the United States is entitled to equal protection under the law. Immigrants and citizens of other countries are no exception.

Laws like Florida's are terrifyingly reminiscent of the 20th century "alien land laws," which were used by white people in the early 1900s to prevent Chinese and Japanese immigrants from settling in U.S. towns and cities. Over time, these laws were struck down by the courts, repealed by state legislatures, or in Florida's case, overturned by voters in 2018, but not before people were harmed.

At a time when one in two Asian Americans report feeling unsafe in the U.S. due to their ethnicity - and nearly 80 percent don't feel they fully belong or are accepted - our leaders have a responsibility to we, the people, to do better.

Everyone in the United States is entitled to equal protection under the law. Blatantly discriminatory policies like Florida's SB264 do not keep us safe. Failing to call out the impacts of these hateful policies means Asian communities in the U.S. will continue to experience racism, violence, and the erosion of their constitutional rights. Please, I'm urging you to speak out against any law that falsely equates people from China with the Chinese government.
