A good place to start this campaign is by disbanding two of the NYPD’s most dangerous and pointless units – the Department’s Vice Squad and its Strategic Response Group.

I’m writing to demand that you disband Vice and the SRG and reinvest their funding in ways that will help, not harm New Yorkers.

The corrupt Vice Squad: Vice is, in theory, tasked with policing so-called quality-of-life offenses such as consensual sex work, narcotics use, and gambling. But in reality, Vice officers use their badges to exploit, sexually harass, and otherwise terrorize sex workers, and their clients. Vice’s activities disproportionately impact Black and Brown New Yorkers and LGBTQ+ people.

The unit has a long history of violence and corruption and the City has paid out millions of dollars to settle lawsuits over serious misconduct.

Instead of allowing Vice’s sexual violence to continue, you should disband Vice and reinvest the unit’s $18.2 million budget into the organizations and services that have helped the same communities long brutalized by Vice policing.

The Strategic Response Group: The SRG has consistently threatened, attacked, and arrested protesters. Time and time again, when SRG arrives on the scene, officers escalate situations and resort to violent tactics against peaceful New Yorkers who are exercising their First Amendment rights.

The SRG’s budget has ballooned from $13 million to $90 million even though most of SRG’s responsibilities are already done by other NYPD agencies.

SRG must disband and its funds should be reinvested in ways that support our communities Specifically, the size of the NYPD headcount should be reduced by the number of SRG officers and the NYPD should not be allowed to recreate the SRG or its militarized tactics under a different name.

The path to disempowering the NYPD begins with disbanding Vice and the SRG.
