Congress: Support D.C. Statehood Now

For too long, the 700,000 residents of D.C. have lived without voting representation in our federal government. Since D.C. is a federal district, the President and Congress can override its local laws, control its budget, and impose their political agenda on its residents. With statehood, D.C. residents would finally be treated like those in every other state and have the same guardrails against federal overreach.

Until D.C. statehood is achieved with the passage of H.R. 51 / S. 51, the federal government needs to respect the will of local D.C. voters to create local legislation and manage its budget. Currently, extreme politicians in Congress are undercutting the voice of hundreds of thousands of American citizens to pursue their political agenda. In doing so, they are ignoring their responsibilities to the nation as a whole. We must act now: Send a message to Congress urging them to stop micromanaging our nation's capital and oppose any future interference in D.C.'s home rule.

D.C. is the only national capital in the democratic world whose citizens do not have equal voting and representation rights. Currently, more than 700,000 Washingtonians pay federal taxes, serve in the military, and contribute to the fabric of our nation; denying them a vote in Congress runs counter to the values upon which our nation was founded. Granting Washington, D.C. statehood is a matter of basic democratic principles. D.C. residents deserve equal representation in Congress, just like citizens in any other state, and I urge you to support H.R. 51 / S. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, to make Washington, D.C. the 51st State.

Until statehood is achieved for D.C., I urge you to oppose any future interference in D.C.'s home rule, which includes opposing any and all legislation that continues to ignore the voices of hundreds of thousands of D.C. residents by disregarding the independence of their voters and their elected leaders. That includes budget riders, disapproval resolutions, and stand-alone legislation that override laws passed by the D.C. Council. It is wrong and inefficient for Congress, where the people of D.C. have no vote, to overturn local laws.
