Tell Governor Lujan Grisham to immediately reduce overcrowding in jails and prisons to protect New Mexicans during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Send Governor Lujan Grisham a Message Now
Public health experts tell us that once an outbreak occurs in jails and prisons it will spread quickly and devastatingly. The outbreak will not just affect the people detained in correctional facilities. It will threaten the staff who work there, the attorneys who make regular legal visits, and surrounding communities at large.
It is the state’s responsibility to make sure COVID-19 does not spread through prisons and jails like wildfire, putting those on the inside as well as our families and communities at risk.
That’s why we’re calling on Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to use her powers to protect incarcerated people and surrounding communities. The first priority must be to reduce overcrowding by ordering the release of those people who do not pose a threat to public safety. This includes people serving time for non-serious offenses, who are detained for minor, technical parole violations, and who are within one year or release.
It’s on all of us to call for immediate actions that will protect the people most vulnerable to this pandemic and to our communities at large. Send Governor Lujan Grisham a message below and tell her that she must immediately downsize the footprint of the criminal legal system as part of the COVID-19 public health response.
