Anti-immigrant laws have no place in Texas

In 2001, Texas passed legislation that allowed immigrants to receive in-state tuition. Since then, Texas filed over 100 anti-immigrant bills. In 2017, lawmakers succeeded in passing one of the most anti-immigrant laws in the country. Here's a timeline of every anti-immigrant bill since 2001:

A Timeline of Texas Anti-Immigrant Bills

Anti-immigrant laws are bad for Texas. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Violating civil rights is easier: Texas' anti-immigrant laws are dangerous and have led to civil rights violations when police racially profile and detain innocent people.
  • Loving families breaking apart: 834,000 Texas children have at least one parent who is undocumented. These kids should be able to live without fear of losing a parent and have faith that the government won't violate their rights.
  • Texas is less safe: Anti-immigrant laws make communities less safe because they create distrust, stop immigrant families from reporting crimes, and take law enforcement's focus away from public safety.

Any solution to fixing our broken immigration system should start with a process not punishment. Undocumented citizens want to follow the rules to become legal residents or citizens, all they need is the chance.
