We the People: A Conversation on Democracy

Please join the ACLU of Illinois and Weinberg/Newton Gallery on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 6:00 PM CT for a conversation on art, democracy, and action. At the event, you will hear directly from ACLU of Illinois Executive Director Colleen Connell (she/her), ACLU of Illinois Springfield Chapter President Ken Page (he/him), artist Aram Han Sifuentes (she/they), and ACLU of Illinois Director of Communications and Public Policy Ed Yohnka (he/him) on the state of our democracy, how to get involved at the local level, and why art is so critical to helping us find hope and understand the moment we are in.

We may all come to different understandings of how a Democracy should function – guided by our identities, life experiences, and perspectives – but how can these competing ideals not just coexist but improve the existing structures and institutions governing our communities? In a time where it feels like our democracy is in crisis, how do we stay engaged and active in the fight to protect the rights of everyone? And, with an upcoming midterm election, how can we empower our communities to vote like our rights are on the ballot – because they are!

Join us on September 29 to explore these questions during this critical inflection point in our democracy’s history. There will be opportunities for audience members to engage in the discussion and ask questions throughout the event.

The ACLU of Illinois strives to create inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to fully engage with its programming. This virtual program will have live captioning. If you would like to request other reasonable accommodations to better participate in this event, please reach out to us.
