Education Equity and Delaware Law (CLE credit available)
The school-to-prison pipeline disproportionately affects historically disadvantaged students, funneling them from educational institutions into the criminal justice system.
First coined in 2003, the school-to-prison pipeline refers to harsh and racially biased disciplinary policies that place punishment and removal from learning environments over rebuilding relationships and repairing harm. These practices impact students with disabilities, low income students, and Black and Brown students statewide, but there is a path forward.
Join us Thursday, February 12 from 12 - 1 p.m. for a discussion of school discipline’s role in the school to prison pipeline in Delaware and the work to identify and decrease discipline disparities impacting students across our state.
Panelists include:
- Shannon Griffin, Director of the Delaware Education Ombudsman Program
- Sarah Hinger, Deputy Director of the ACLU Racial Justice Program
- Aaron Kupchik, Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice University of Delaware
- Tobi Omotoso, ACLU-DE Education Equity Fellow (moderator)
Amicus Society members receive free CLE credit for attendance. Admission for attorneys who seek CLE credit but are not Amicus Society members is $50.
Attorneys who attend are eligible for one hour of Continuing Legal Education credit.
