On July 13, 2006, the House of Representatives rejected an amendment to strike the language
assistance provisions of the Voting Rights Act by a vote of 185-238. The ACLU opposed the amendment because language assistance is critically important to help voters who are limited in their English proficiency. The language assistance provisions in the VRA are carefully targeted at jurisdictions with large populations of U.S. citizens of voting age who do not speak English well.
