On September 14, 2005, the House agreed to The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention
Act of 2005 by a vote of 223 to 199. The ACLU endorsed this amendment because it would expand
the federal criminal civil rights statute to include violent acts against a person because of a person's sexual orientation, gender identity, gender or disability. It also protects First Amendment rights by providing that evidence of a person's speech or membership can be used to prove the crime only if the evidence is directly related to the violent offense. The amendment was made to The Children's Safety Act of 2005.
