On May 25, 2005, the House rejected by a vote of 194 to 233, an amendment to the National
Defense Authorization Act, which would have helped provide equal access to comprehensive
reproductive health care to U.S. servicewomen and military dependents, regardless of where they
are stationed. The amendment would have repealed the current ban on using private funds to
obtain abortion services at military hospitals. The ACLU supported this amendment because it would
ensure that women stationed overseas are not deprived of their constitutional right to choose that is
guaranteed at home.
