The World We Want
January 22, 2007 marks the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that significantly expanded the ability of women across the country to decide when and whether to become a parent. The election of new pro-choice members of Congress has given us reasons to be optimistic that 2007 will be a year in which we see reproductive rights both protected and expanded. And on this Roe anniversary, we find ourselves envisioning the world we hope to achieve:
- In the world we want, women and men are given the tools and education they need to build and maintain healthy lives and healthy families. Reproductive health care is basic health care.
- In the world we want, all women have meaningful access to birth control and are able to obtain an abortion if and when they need one.
- In the world we want, young people are given medically accurate information that encourages teens to abstain from sex, but also gives them the know-how to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases and prevent unintended pregnancy.
- In the world we want, women who serve in the military, as well as the spouses and dependants of service members, can obtain reproductive health services no matter where they are stationed.
- In the world we want, women who survive rape or sexual assault are offered information about and access to emergency contraception without delays.
To realize this world, we must continue to work for reproductive freedom. If you want these same things, then we hope that you’ll join us.
